NERINO, TYPICAL ITALIAN BREED, THE BLACK PIG, ITALY’S LOST TREASURE.
Our ancestors’ pigs used to be black, a typical italian, slow growing, breed, which provides high quality meat, good for the production of both sausages and fine hams. Although, back in 1900, pink pig, imported from North Europe, took the upper hand in intensive breedings and for the manufacturing of products more and more industrial and similar to each other.
Today, thanks to Laurenzi Farm. the black pig is back in Valnerina, where, nevertheless, has always been, although only in our churches’ frescoes: the black pig is actually often portrayed together with Sant’Antonio (St. Anthony).
